Launched a new tab connecting 500M learners to each other. It made a big splash.
Nearly 8 years at Duolingo, from a team of about 30 through IPO, designing for 500M+ learners in a deeply global, multilingual product. Most of my work was community-focused, connecting learners to the brand and to each other.
System snapshots Patterns deserve systems. A few problems I solved once, so my team doesn’t have to solve them again.
Is speed the enemy of quality?
Not if quality is built in. With our engineering manager, I set up a design check before any front-end change ships, even small fixes, with designers covering for each other across time zones. Engineers now run an AI design-parity tool themselves before bug bashes, so quality holds even when a designer isn’t in the room.
How do you design for countries you haven’t launched in yet?
You build for them on day one. I built our most complex business flow as a component library from the start, so each new country is a variation of the original flow. Another designer now leads EU expansion on it independently.
Can a new initiative contribute to the Design System?
Close collaboration with the Design Systems team has made the process easy for our team to improve, suggest, and add new patterns that designers across the entire company can benefit from.
What happens when a pod’s only designer goes on vacation?
Nothing should stall. One designer per pod is a real risk on tight launch cycles, so I built a staffing system that reads the engineering roadmap, our staffing plan, and the vacation calendar. Design reviews flow from Jira into one Slack channel, and a shared designer handle pings the whole team, so whoever is free picks it up. Launches keep moving, and the designer on vacation can actually log off.
